As a general rule for basic home office use like microsoft office, web browsing, video playback & emails an i3 will suffice. For slightly more complex office applications or heavy multi-tasking, an i5, and if you plan to run specific compute intensive applications, work with very large data sets, do a bit of high definition video editing an i7 or even i9 depending on your budget will be the way to go.
