For slightly more complex office applications or heavy multi-tasking, something in the mid range, and if you plan to run specific compute intensive applications, work with very large data sets, do a bit of high definition video editing then it's worth looking at the top end models.

Not enough will severely impact performance but more than you need wont improve it. We recommend 16GB as a baseline for low to mid-range system, 32GB for a high end system and 64G or above only when you have a particular use case that justifies it.
