Malfunctional USB Ports

Published 28th Jan 2022, updated 8th Apr 2024 - 2 minute read

If your USB port stops working correctly/at all, it doesn't necessarily mean they're broken. Below are some suggestions that can potentially fix this issue.

Restart the PC

Restarting the PC is the answer to many random/intermittent problems and a common solution to USB woes too.

Uninstall USB drivers

Uninstalling the driver of the USB ports will force Windows to reinstall it when you restart the PC. This could resolve the issue. Here's how to do it!

  • In the Windows search function, type in Device Manager and hit Enter.
  • Here, expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers
  • Now right-click the entry USB Host Controller and then click on Uninstall Device
  • Repeat this for all entries with USB Host Controller to uninstall drivers for all the USB ports
  • Once deleted, restart the PC and Windows will automatically reinstall the drivers and fix any driver issues

Consider recent activity

Often if a USB port appears to be misbehaving, if you can try to think about any recent additions or changes you might have made to the system whether physically (plugging in new devices, or internal hardware changes) or software, and undoing them (if possible) to see if the problem persists.

We've heard from a few customers who have been trying to plug in a USB Type-C device/cable and have accidentally inserted it into the USB Type-A port. We absolutely do not recommend this! We've heard that it can cause more than just the single USB Type-A port to not function again. What's happening here, we assume, is that it's shorting the circuit/controller that runs the USB Type-A ports which can mean killing off four or more ports in one go!

As you might expect, this sort of damage is not covered by manufacturer warranty or Evatech warranty as it constitutes as physical damage/improper use.

Please be extra careful when plugging in USB Type-C to your PC.
